 The history of the flag of Turkey
 The flag of Turkey has a red background with a white five-pointed star and a white crescent moon. The waxing moon is the moon that appears in the sky two weeks after the new moon. When Turkey came into being in 1923 after the fall of the Ottoman Empire, Turkey adopted the old flag of the Ottoman Empire. This flag is, with some minor changes in 1936, the current flag of Turkey.

 Red has been a symbol of the Ottoman Empire since 1500. The crescent is a much older sign, but it also became a symbol of the Ottoman Empire around 1500. However, there were many other flags, including many tricolors, where the top and bottom stripes were red. With these flags, the middle color varied, because it depended on religion. Variation in flags was especially useful in shipping and trade, because after the conquest of Constantinople, the Ottoman Empire was feared by the other great powers in the Mediterranean and needed a large navy. For merchant ships, it was useful to have flags based on religion, because some religious groups had to pay higher taxes or had privileges.

 After the conquests of Syria and Egypt, the Ottoman Empire became increasingly Islamic, leading to political reforms. Red and green became the national symbols, green for religious power and red for secular power. National flags also adopted these colors, with different flags for the navy, army, and state. It was during this time that a star was used for the first time, although it was an eight-pointed star instead of the current five-pointed star. In 1839, there were several reforms, because it had to be a national flag. In 1844, the Turkish flag was officially adopted. This flag is similar to the current national flag of Turkey, with some minor changes.
