History of the Philippine flag
The flag of the Philippines consists of two horizontal stripes with a white triangle with a flat side on the hoist side. The colors of the bicolor are blue and red. In the white triangle is a sun with three five-pointed stars at the corners. The white triangle symbolizes the ideals of the French Revolution, liberty, equality and fraternity. The horizontal blue line represents peace, truth and justice. The red stripe stands for patriotism and heroism. In the center of the white triangle is a sun with eight rays. The sun represents unity, freedom, democracy and sovereignty. The eight rays of the sun represent the first eight provinces that rebelled against Spain with a revolution in 1896. The three stars stand for the three major archipelagos with which the Philippines started.
From 1565, the Philippines was part of the Spanish Empire and the Spanish flag was flown, only in 1897 did the Philippines become independent and the first Philippine Republic was established. This republic got its own flag, this was a red flag with a white sun with eight sun rays with a face in the middle. In 1898, the Philippines became part of the United States, the same year the Philippines got its own new flag which was flown along with the American flag. This new flag had the same design as the current national flag of the Philippines, only the sun had a different design. In 1907, this flag was banned and only the American flag became the national flag of the Philippines. This was reversed in 1919. In 1942, the Philippines was conquered by the Japanese, but they were defeated again at the end of World War II. The Philippines officially became independent in 1946 and after several changes to the color blue, the current flag was officially adopted in 1998.
Philippine flag rules
A Philippine flag in homage to the Philippines should not be hung outside at night. The Philippine flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Want to hang several world flags next to each other? Use country flags of the same size or hang them at the same height. The most important country flag – in Norway, the Norwegian flag – always stands in the foreground. You can determine the ranking by using the first letter of the French names of the countries involved.
