The history of the Indian flag
The flag of India is a horizontal tricolor, which means that the flag consists of three horizontal bands of the same size. The colors of the Indian flag are saffron, white, and green, and in the center of the flag is a blue Asoka Chakra, which is a wheel with 24 spokes. The colors have symbolic meanings. Saffron symbolizes courage, white symbolizes peace, and green symbolizes diligence. The Asoka Chakra was originally a chakra that referred to Gandhi's spinning wheel and therefore self-sufficiency, but this was changed in 1947. Today, the Asoka Chakra refers to the “wheel of law.” The symbol is centuries old and has its origins in Buddhism. The 24 oak leaves represent the 24 hours of the day and the progress of each hour.
India was a British colony until 1950, but the call for a separate flag had been there long before that. In 1906, the first flag was unveiled at a protest rally. This flag was an orange-yellow-green tricolor with eight half-open lotus flowers in the orange upper band and a sun and a crescent moon in the green lower band. The yellow middle band on the 1906 flag stood for Mataram in Hindi. The political group that wanted to keep India independent, but within the British Commonwealth, had since 1917 a red and green striped flag with seven stars in the shape of the constellation Ursa Major. A union flag was placed in the upper left corner and a sun and moon in the upper right corner. Gandhi approved a flag in 1921, but it did not succeed; it was not until 1931 that agreement was reached on the Indian flag, which was exactly like the current Indian flag, a saffron-white-green tricolor, only with a stylized spinning wheel instead of a wheel. In 1947, the spinning wheel was replaced by the current wheel.
Rules for Indian flags
An Indian flag in honor of India should not be hung outside at night. The Indian flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Would you like to hang several world flags next to each other? Use national flags of the same size or hang them at the same height. The most important national flag – in Norway, the Norwegian flag – always takes pride of place. You can determine the ranking by using the first letter of the French names of the countries involved.
