Maintaining Canadian flags

A flag normally lasts 3 to 4 months with regular use. It is very important to maintain a flag properly and regularly to extend its life and keep it looking good. Here are some tips to keep your flag in the best possible condition:

•  Use a cloth and a little soap to clean the flag, but make sure that the detergent does not contain any chlorinated ingredients.

• Wash the flag in a mild detergent at a temperature of about 40 degrees.

• After washing, let the flag dry for a while instead of folding it immediately.

After these steps, store the Canadian flag in a dry place to reduce the risk of mold.

The history of the Canadian flag

Shortly after Canadian Confederation in 1867, the need arose for a distinctive Canadian flag. The first Canadian flag was the flag of the Governor General of Canada, a union flag with a central shield bearing the four arms of Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick. It was surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves.

We have compiled a number of facts for you:

• The maple leaf on Canada's national flag originally had 13 points. This design was changed to the current 11-point design to increase the clarity of the symbol. It was difficult to distinguish the maple leaf when viewed from a distance or when it was flying in windy conditions.

• A major change to the symbol occurred in 1921, when Canada adopted a new coat of arms. The coat of arms featured the symbols of England, Scotland, Ireland, and France with three green maple leaves on a silver background. That shield replaced the original from 1868 in Canadian ensigns three years later.

• Calls for a distinct Canadian flag increased after World War II. While the red flag was recognized for use on public buildings and as the national flag of Canada abroad, many felt that it failed to showcase distinctive local cultures and traditions. Months of public and parliamentary debate resulted in the adoption of the new Maple Leaf Flag in 1964, which became official by royal proclamation and is now widely supported by the Canadian people. This made the colors of the Canadian flag red and white.

Frequently asked questions

How did the Canadian flag come about? After much debate in the House of Commons, Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson created a new parliamentary committee to select a national flag before the centennial in 1967. In 1964, after reviewing many flag designs, the commission selected the version that would become Canada's current national flag.

Why is there a leaf on the Canadian flag?

The maple leaf emerged in the 1800s as a symbol of Canadian identity and has been ubiquitous in popular culture: books, songs, coins, badges, banners, and many other items. Generations of Canadians had adopted the maple leaf as a symbol of their identity, but it was not until World War I that it became the nation's most recognized emblem and the significance of the Canadian flag grew even stronger.
