The history of the American flag
The flag of the United States, or the American flag, consists of seven horizontal red stripes alternating with six white stripes. In the upper left corner is a blue area, in which there are fifty white stars. This is where the flag's nickname, Stars and Stripes, comes from. The thirteen stripes represent the original colonies that separated from Great Britain. The fifty stars represent the number of states, and the blue box symbolizes the union of the states. Since the founding of America, the flag has had to be changed 26 times as more states were formed. The current version of the American flag has been in use since 1960, making it the longest-used version.
The United States Code defines the basic design of the American flag. The American flag can traditionally be decorated with a gold border, but not on the hoist side. This is a practice that dates back to 1835 and has been used by the military since 1895, but it has never been codified into law. Americans are proud of their flag, and in the Pledge of Allegiance, they swear allegiance first to the flag of the United States and then to the republic. The US flag must not be treated disrespectfully; for example, it must not touch the ground and must always be flown at full mast. There are also a number of places in the US where the flag must always be displayed, including the White House in Washington DC. As a private individual in the US, it is not unusual to fly the US flag every day. Not to be forgotten are the six US flags that were placed on the moon during the Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972.
