The history of the flag of Bonaire
The flag of Bonaire consists of three stripes, which are placed diagonally. The colors of these stripes are yellow, white and blue. An emblem is placed on the white stripe, which contains the colors black and red. The black ring on the flag symbolizes a compass with four equal triangles, this compass stands for the equality of all people from the north, east, south and west. The red star in the center of this compass is six-pointed, this star represents the six original villages of the island. These villages are Playa, Nikiboko, Tera Korá, Antriol, Nort Saliña and Rincon. The red color represents the blood that offers the survival power to Bonaires.
The colors, yellow, white and blue, also have their own symbolic meaning. The yellow color symbolizes the sun and the flowers that grow on Bonaire. The color yellow was chosen for these flowers, because most of the flowers on Bonaire originally grew there in the color yellow. Examples of these yellow flowers on Bonaire are Kibrahacha, Anglo and the cactus flower. The white color symbolizes peace and internationalism. The blue of the flag takes up half the surface, this color represents the sea with its high waves. In wartime, Bonairians sailed to sea to maintain the transport of oil from Venezuela. These inhabitants of Bonaire had a lot of courage, because it was known that 80% of these people did not return alive. These people died from submarine attacks. The blue part is therefore the symbol of the sea, but also a marking of the inhabitants of Bonaire who gave their lives. The flag with this beautiful meaning has been in use since December 11, 1981.
Bonaire flag rules
A flag in homage to Bonaire should not be hung outside at night. The Bonaire flag is therefore raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Do you want to hang several world flags next to each other? Use country flags of the same size or hang them at the same height. The most important country flag – in Norway, the Norwegian flag – always stands in the foreground. You can determine the ranking by using the first letter of the French names of the countries involved.
