The history of the Swedish flag
The Swedish flag as we know it today consists of a blue background with a yellow Scandinavian cross depicted on it. The vertical yellow stripe has moved slightly towards the flagpole. Swedish law defines the exact proportions of the Swedish flag. There are two variants of the Swedish flag, the rectangular variant is used for the civil and state flag, but another variant is used for the war flag. ( read flag-blog ) The Swedish war ensign is also known as the swallowtail variant. This is similar to the Swedish state flag, but it has three tongues at the end. The royal standard is the swallowtail variant with the royal coat of arms in a white area placed at the intersection of the two yellow bands.
The colors of the Swedish flag are based on the Swedish coat of arms. The Swedish coat of arms consists of three golden crowns depicted on a blue surface. The design of the Swedish flag is probably derived from the Danish flag, the Dannebrog. This flag consists of a white Scandinavian cross on a red surface. The design of the Swedish flag was officially established in 1569, when the Swedish flag had already been in use for several decades. On March 7, 1815, the Swedish war flag became the same as the Norwegian war flag, because both countries had the same king. From 1844 on the Norwegian and Swedish flags, a so-called Sildsalat was placed in the upper left corner. On this so-called Sildsalat, both flags were symmetrically merged into a symbol of the union. After the union was dissolved in 1905, this emblem also disappeared from the Swedish flag. The Swedish flag has not been changed since 1905. Sweden has rules about the size of the flagpole in relation to the Swedish flag. With a flagpole standing on the ground, the Swedish flag must occupy a quarter of the flagpole. With a flagpole, the Swedish flag must occupy a third.
Rules for the Swedish flag
A Swedish flag as a tribute to Sweden should not be hung outside at night. The Swedish flag is therefore raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Do you want to hang several world flags next to each other? Use country flags of the same size or hang them at the same height. The most important country flag - in Norwegian the Norwegian flag - is always in the foreground. You can determine the ranking by using the first letter of the French names of the countries involved.
