The history of the Ukrainian flag

The Ukrainian flag has two horizontal bands of equal size, the top one being blue and the bottom one yellow. There is no specific point in Ukrainian history when these colors were first used. The colors of the Ukrainian flag played an important role in the High Middle Ages in the principalities of the area we now know as Ukraine. In 1410, the principality of Galicia-Walynia chose a blue banner with a yellow lion as its recognizable symbol. The soldiers from Przemysler also chose a blue banner, but this one had a yellow double-headed eagle as its emblem. From 1349, the area that is now Ukraine belonged to the Kingdom of Poland and therefore did not have its own flag.

It was not until 1917 that Ukraine became independent, before being divided by Russia, Prussia and Austria-Hungary. During the short period when Ukraine was an independent state from 1917 to 1920, both the current flag and a reversed version were used. In 1920, Ukraine became a republic of Russia and a red flag with the abbreviation YCCP in the upper left corner was used. The style of the letters was changed three times between 1920 and 1940, and a hammer and sickle were also added. These recognizable symbols of communism were later removed. After World War II, a new flag was adopted on November 21, 1949, which would remain in use longer than its predecessors. This flag had a red background, which was the same as the previous versions. The lower part of the flag was light blue, and a hammer and sickle with a star were also added to this flag. Officially, the hammer and sickle were only depicted on the front, but in practice they were visible on both sides. In 1988, constituent republics were once again allowed to use historical nationalist symbols, and as a result, the current Ukrainian flag was increasingly flown in 1990, including at official government buildings. In 1991, Ukraine became independent and the flag was officially adopted.
