The history of the Swiss flag
The Swiss flag consists of a white upright Greek cross on a red background. The Swiss flag is a world-renowned symbol and is associated with quality. Due to this association with quality and Swiss pride, several companies use this Swiss flag in their public appearances. To pay tribute to Switzerland and to avoid confusion with the Red Cross emblem, all states that are parties to the First Geneva Convention are obliged to criminalize offensive or inappropriate use of the Swiss flag.
The current Swiss flag is derived from the flag of Schwyz, which is one of the Swiss cantons. Since the 14th century, Schwyz has been trying to create a unified state. In 1339, at the Battle of Laupen, the flag was first documented as being used as a Swiss symbol and not just as a symbol of the state of Schwyz. Despite the fact that Switzerland was not a unified state, the flag of Schwyz was used as a unifying flag in the following centuries. The first official national Swiss flag dates back to 1799. This flag was actually the flag of the Helvetic Republic, an attempt to unite the Swiss cantons as a unified state. This flag consisted of three horizontal bands in the colors green, red, and yellow. In the center field, the name of the state was written in French. This flag was used until the end of the Republic in 1803. The Swiss cross was added to the Swiss coat of arms in 1815 and was introduced 25 years later as the flag of the Swiss Army at the suggestion of Guillaume Henri Dufour. The Swiss flag as we know it today with the white cross on a red background was adopted in 1841. The current form was first established by federal decree in 1889.
Swiss flag rules
A Swiss flag as a tribute to Switzerland should not be hung outside at night. The Swiss flag is therefore raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Do you want to hang several world flags next to each other? Use country flags of the same size or hang them at the same height. The most important national flag - in Norway the Norwegian flag - is always placed in the foreground. You can determine the ranking by using the first letter of the French names of the countries involved.
