The history of the Norwegian flag

The Norwegian national flag is a red flag with a dark blue cross surrounded by a white border. The vertical stripe in the lower left corner is offset towards the flagpole, as is the case in several Scandinavian countries. Fredrik Meltzer designed the Norwegian flag and chose a similar design to the flags of Denmark and Sweden. The cross is seen as a symbol of Christianity. The color combination of the Norwegian flag, namely red, white, and blue, was chosen as a symbol of democracy. This Norwegian flag was designed in 1821, but it was not officially adopted until 1898.

In the Middle Ages, Norway did not have a national flag, but some rulers used their own flags. The oldest flag that can be considered the Norwegian national flag had a red background with a golden lion and an axe. This Norwegian flag is the royal standard to this day. This flag was adopted as the royal flag in 1280 and was derived from the Norwegian coat of arms. Due to the union with Denmark in the 1500s, the use of the Norwegian flag with the lion and axe slowly died out. In Norway at that time, however, the flag continued to fly until 1698. During the period of union with Denmark, the Danish flag, nicknamed Dannebrog, was used. In 1748, Dannebrog even became Norway's only national flag. In 1814, the union with Denmark ended and with it the Norwegian flag changed again. The Norwegians kept the Danish flag, but placed their own old symbol of the lion and axe in the upper left corner. This flag was short-lived, as a new union with Sweden was formed in 1821, which was to last until 1899. This led to the Norwegian flag changing to the one we know today, with the so-called herring salad placed in the upper left corner. This herring salad was the symbol of the union in which both flags were represented. After the union broke up, the herring salad was removed and the current Norwegian national flag was created.
