The history of the Uruguayan flag
Uruguay has had its current flag since December 16, 1828. However, this flag consisted of seventeen stripes, but since July 11, 1830, the flag of the Republic of Uruguay has had nine stripes. The nine stripes on the flag symbolize the nine departments that the republic had at that time. In 1839, the design of the flag was changed, with the blue and white stripes being reversed. In 1843, the flag was changed again, with the sun placed in the center of the flag. However, both of these changes were reversed in 1851, when the old flag with nine stripes was reinstated.
The Uruguayan flag therefore consists of nine stripes, each of equal height and length, four blue and five white. The sun is in the upper left corner of the flag. The white area on which the sun is located is a square with a height and width of five stripes. The sun on the flag is asymmetrical and has sixteen rays. The sun depicted on the flag is the maize sun, also called the Inca sun. This sun represents the Inca sun god Inti. The image of the sun is the same as on the first Argentine coin. The value of this coin was eight escudos (Argentine dollars) and the sun had eight straight and eight wavy rays.
The flag of Uruguay resembles that of Argentina, and the sun and the blue color of the stripes are therefore derived from the Argentine flag. However, the shape of the flag, the horizontal stripes, is derived from the flag of the United States.
