 History of the Romanian flag
 The flag of Romania is a vertical tricolor, meaning that the flag consists of three vertical bands of equal size. The colors of the Romanian flag are blue, yellow, and red. The colors have been in use in what is now Romania since the 10th century. The colors represent the principalities of the historical provinces. Blue for Wallachia, yellow for Transylvania, and red for Moldavia. Later, the communist government from 1947 to 1989 proclaimed that the symbolic meaning of the colors would be different; red for the blood of the dead heroes, yellow for the wheat fields, and blue for the sky. To reinforce this, the color sequence was named differently at that time. Red-yellow-blue instead of the usual red-yellow-blue sequence, when viewed from the hoist side.
 In the 10th century, the three principalities of Wallachia, Transylvania and Moldavia each had their own flags. They were mainly blue, yellow and red. In 1600, a first attempt was made to merge the three principalities. That attempt died with the death of its initiator, but this attempt was later seen as the example for nationalists who wanted to merge the principalities. During the Revolution of 1848, the first national Romanian flag was a horizontal tricolor with the words "justice and brotherhood" on it. When Romania became communist after World War II, the flag was given a communist logo. During the 1989 revolution, they were cut from the flag as a sign of resistance. The current flag was officially adopted on 16 July 1994.
