The history of the Polish flag
The Polish flag is a horizontal two-color flag, i.e. the flag consists of two equal stripes. These stripes are white and red. The Polish flag has no official meaning, except that it symbolizes the Polish country and people. The Polish flag has no symbolism because the colors are inspired by the colors of the medieval Polish coat of arms. The Polish flag thus represents the historical Polish colors. Poland has two different flags: the civil flag and the state flag. The civil flag is the well-known flag described above, while the state flag is the same but with the addition of the coat of arms of the Republic of Poland.
In the Middle Ages, the Polish flag consisted of a white eagle on a red field, which changed in 1569 when Poland entered into a personal union with Lithuania and designed a flag together. This flag kept red and white as its basic colors, but a tricolor was chosen in the composition red-white-red. In the nineteenth century, Poland was divided between Prussia, Russia, and Austria-Hungary. During the November Uprising of 1831, the rebels wanted a national flag, and a design was created for this flag that corresponds to the current Polish national flag. The November Uprising was crushed with a heavy hand, so this new flag never came into use. When the original Polish population regained their country after World War I in 1918, there was disagreement about the national flag. Finally, a white flag with red was chosen, which became the current flag in 1927 with minor changes to the colors. After the communist takeover, the flag was changed again, but after 1990 it was changed back to the current national flag of Poland.
Rules for the Polish flag
A Polish flag flown in honor of Poland should not be left outside at night. The Polish flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Would you like to fly several world flags side by side? Use national flags of the same size or hang them at the same height. The most important national flag – in Norway, the Norwegian flag – always takes pride of place. You can determine the ranking by using the first letter of the French names of the countries involved.
