 History of the flag of Congo-Kinshasa
 The flag of Congo-Kinshasa is blue with a yellow star in the upper left corner and a red band surrounded by two yellow bands from the bottom of the hoist to the upper right corner. The flag is derived from the flag used by the Association Internationale Africaine, which is a blue flag with a yellow star in the center. The flag used by the Association Internationale Africaine was also used by the Congo Free State from 1877 and then by the Belgian Congo. Congo became independent in 1960, but the design remained in use. The new flag of Congo, which was designed in 1960, had six stars placed on the hoist, these stars representing the six provinces of Congo.

Political difficulties led to a coup d'état in 1971 and from 1971 to 1997 the flag of the new republic, the Republic of Zaire, was flown.
