The history of the Danish flag
The Danish flag is also called the Dannebrog, which is Danish for Danish banner or Danish cloth. The Danish flag is the oldest national flag still in use. ( read flag-blog ) The flag of Denmark is red with a white Scandinavian cross in it. The Danish flag has three different designs, the civil flag, the state flag and the naval flag. The design of the Danish flag has been adopted by other Scandinavian countries, including Sweden, Norway, Finland and Iceland.
According to legend, the Danish flag fell from the sky at the Battle of Lyndanisse, an event that is said to have led to the Danish victory. However, this story was not written down until several centuries after the event and is considered a myth. The real origin of the flag is much disputed. In addition to the myth of the Battle of Lyndanisse, there is another theory about the origin of the Danish flag. According to this theory, the Danish flag was donated by the Pope to the Danish king for use in the Crusades in the Baltic countries. No Danish letters have been found about this event, while a gift from the Pope was a great honor at that time. Due to a lack of sources, this theory can neither be denied nor confirmed.
The first indisputable sources about the Danish flag date from the 15th century, it is noteworthy that the source for this is a Dutch book. The Danish flag has not changed since the 15th century. During the union with Norway from 1536 to 1814, the Danish flag has also been the flag of Norway. After the fall of the union, the flag of Norway remained the same as the flag of Denmark, but with an addition from the Norwegian coat of arms. It was not until 1821 that Norway adopted its current flag.
Rules for the Danish flag
A Danish flag as a tribute to Denmark should not be hung outside at night. The Danish flag is therefore raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Do you want to hang several world flags next to each other? Use country flags of the same size or hang them at the same height. The most important national flag - in Norway the Norwegian flag - is always placed in the foreground. You can determine the ranking by using the first letter of the French names of the countries involved.
