 History of the Bulgarian flag
 The Bulgarian flag is a horizontal tricolor, meaning that the flag consists of three horizontal stripes. White-green-red was chosen for the color scheme of the Bulgarian flag. The white color of the Bulgarian flag represents peace and freedom. The red of the Bulgarian flag represents bravery and the central green color symbolizes agriculture. The composition of the colors depicts the feeling of change. White and red are two of the Pan-Slavic colors. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1878, Ottoman Bulgaria was made a principality. Until then, Bulgaria had a white-blue-red flag following the example of the Russian flag.
 Shortly after Bulgaria's independence, the blue was replaced with the color green. After World War II, Bulgaria became communist and placed the Bulgarian coat of arms in the upper left corner. In total, the Bulgarian flag has had four different coats of arms from 1946 to 1990. In 1990, the Bulgarian flag that had been in use since April 16, 1879, was reinstated as the official national Bulgarian flag. So, with a break of 44 years, the current Bulgarian flag has been in use since 1879. Bulgaria has had a new coat of arms since 1997, which is the same coat of arms as before communist Bulgaria. However, this coat of arms has been slightly modified since then. The current Bulgarian coat of arms shows a lion rampant in gold on a red field. Around this symbol are two crowned yellow lions walking on green leaves. Bulgaria has chosen not to place this coat of arms of Bulgaria on its flag.
