The history of the flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina
The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina is blue with a yellow triangle with nine white stars underneath. Two of the nine stars are half-depicted because they are located on the edge of the flag. The flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina was adopted after the Bosnian Civil War and was intended to promote brotherhood. The yellow triangle symbolizes the shape of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the three peoples living in the country: Serbs, Croats, and Bosniaks. The flag was designed by a committee consisting of representatives from the three ethnic groups. The stars and color combination are taken from the European flag.
Bosnia and Herzegovina has often been dominated by other larger countries and has not had its own national flag for a long time. The flags of the Byzantines, Ottomans, Austria-Hungary and Nazi Germany were all flown in Bosnia and Herzegovina before the Yugoslav flag was adopted. At the time of Ottoman rule, Bosnia-Hungary had a provincial flag, which was green with a crescent moon and an eight-pointed star. In 1908, both Bosnia and Herzegovina were provinces of Austria-Hungary and had the exact opposite flag. Bosnia had a red and yellow horizontal bicolor and Herzegovina a yellow and red one. However, these flags were only in use for ten years and in 1918 Bosnia-Herzegovina became part of Yugoslavia in the communist federation and did not have its own flag until 1945. In 1945, Bosnia-Herzegovina was given a red flag with the flag of Yugoslavia in the upper left corner, the red representing socialism and communism. When Bosnia and Herzegovina declared its independence in 1992, the country was given a white flag with a blue shield. This flag was seen as a flag only for Bosniaks and not for Serbs and Croats. In 2004, after a long debate, the current flag of Bosnia and Herzegovina was introduced.
Bosnian flag rules
A Bosnian flag in honor of Bosnia and Herzegovina should not be hung outside at night. The Bosnian flag is raised at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Do you want to hang several world flags next to each other? Use national flags of the same size or hang them at the same height. The most important national flag – in Norway, the Norwegian flag – always takes precedence. You can determine the ranking by using the first letter of the French names of the countries involved.
